The Northern Frontier Expedition

14 days1,500 kmSouthern, Western & Northern UgandaremoteFrom $2,690 pp

Fourteen days that run the length of the country south to north, with every night available as either expedition camping or a hotel bed — the same route, your choice of comfort.

This route touches more of Uganda's big-game parks than any other trip of its length: Mburo's zebra, Queen Elizabeth's channel, Ziwa's rhinos, Murchison's falls, and Kidepo's genuine wilderness, finishing in the Karimojong homeland of Karamoja. Tell us at booking whether you want tents or beds — the itinerary and driving stay identical either way.

The route on the map

Day by day

0140 min

Entebbe — the handover

Vehicle briefing and, if you've chosen the camping version, a full rooftop-tent demonstration before an early dinner by the lake.

Night: Lakeside guesthouse, Entebbe
024h

South to Lake Mburo

A tarmac run south with a stop at the equator line, arriving in time for an evening walking safari among the zebra.

Night: Lake Mburo NP
033h

Queen Elizabeth — the Kazinga Channel

West to Mweya for a boat down the channel, hippo and elephant close along the water.

Night: Mweya, Queen Elizabeth NP
04game drives

Kasenyi plains

An early drive on the northern tracks for lion, with the rest of the day free at the lodge.

Night: Mweya, Queen Elizabeth NP

North to Ziwa

A long push day looping past Kampala to the sanctuary — the longest single drive of the route.

Night: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
062h

Rhino tracking, then Murchison

A morning walk among the rhinos, then a short drive into the park for an evening game drive.

Night: Murchison Falls NP
07the day

Boat safari & the top of the falls

A launch to the base of the falls, then the short walk to where the whole Nile forces itself through seven metres of rock.

Night: Murchison Falls NP
083h

North to Gulu

Tarmac gives way to your first real murram as the country opens out and the towns thin toward the north.

Night: Gulu
093h

Kitgum

Quieter roads through increasingly remote country, with the Aswa River crossed twice before Kitgum's wide dirt streets.

Night: Kitgum
104h

Into Kidepo Valley

The roughest day of the route: red murram through empty country until the valley opens out below the Morungole range.

Night: Apoka, Kidepo Valley NP
11game drives

Narus Valley

A full day on the valley floor, with buffalo and lion in numbers that feel improbable given how few other vehicles you'll see.

Night: Apoka, Kidepo Valley NP
124h

South to Moroto

Out of the park into Karamoja proper, flat-topped mountains and cattle tracks the whole way.

Night: Moroto
13half day

The Karimojong homeland

A guided visit to a manyatta and a short walk into the Moroto foothills, arranged well in advance so the welcome is a genuine one.

Night: Moroto
146h

Hand back, fly home

A long final drive back toward Entebbe. We collect the vehicle from your guesthouse whenever your flight demands it.

Travellers who drove it

We did the camping version and it changed how the whole trip felt — waking up at Apoka with the tent open to the valley is not something a hotel room replicates.

Werner — Austria

South to north in one route meant we genuinely saw the whole country change under the wheels, not just one region of it.

the Petersons — United States

Booking the hotel option instead of camping was the right call for us and GTE never made us feel like we'd picked the lesser version.
