Sixteen days and one international border, built around two countries that are a two-hour drive apart but feel like different continents.
This is the one route where the vehicle itself needs paperwork, not just you — a cross-border permit and Rwandan third-party insurance, both of which we arrange before you land so the crossing at Cyanika is a stamp and a wave, not a negotiation. The Uganda half stays close to our other routes: Mburo's zebra, Bwindi's gorillas, Kibale's chimps. The Rwanda half is a different country's pace entirely — Kigali's genocide memorial and hillside cafés, then several unhurried days on Lake Kivu before the drive back in.

Entebbe — the handover
We meet your flight and spend an unhurried hour on the vehicle before dinner by the lake — tyres, fuel stops, checkpoints, and this time a second briefing specifically on the Cyanika border crossing paperwork, which we hand you in a folder so you're not hunting for it at the barrier.

A tarmac run south past the equator line, arriving with time for an evening game drive — this is the only park on the route with zebra, and one of the few in the country where you can leave the vehicle and walk with a ranger.

A longer day skirting Queen Elizabeth's fringe and climbing into the southwest's terraced hills, the murram starting about an hour out from the forest edge.

Two to seven hours in the forest depending on where the family slept, then one hour with them at close range. Nothing is scheduled for the afternoon on purpose.

A short transfer to twenty-nine islands and no crocodiles — a genuine rest day before tomorrow's border crossing, deliberately placed straight after the trek rather than straight after it.

South to Kisoro and the Cyanika border post, where your folder of vehicle paperwork does the talking. Rwanda's roads are almost entirely sealed, and the run into Kigali on the far side is faster than anything you've driven so far.

A short, scenic drive through Rwanda's terraced hill country to Rubavu on the lakeshore, with Congo's Nyiragongo volcano visible across the water on a clear afternoon.

A boat trip out to one of the lake's islands in the morning, then nothing scheduled at all — the first of two days built around doing very little after four straight days of driving and one big forest morning.

A second unhurried day on the lakeshore — a kayak out along the water if you want it, or simply the terrace and nothing else. Most people are glad we built two of these in rather than one.

North to the Cyanika crossing again, then on to the Kazinga Channel side of Queen Elizabeth by evening. The vehicle paperwork is a formality on the way back in, same as the way out.

A boat down the channel in the morning — the densest hippo concentration on the continent — and an afternoon game drive on the Kasenyi tracks for lion.
